About Guru Arjun Samajik Pratisthan

History and Evolution

Guru Arjun Samajik Pratisthan was founded in 1998 by Sardar Harjeet Singh Wadhwa with the vision of serving society through volunteer work. The organization started with a simple but powerful mission: to inspire acts of kindness and build a sense of community, especially among children, by celebrating festivals and promoting values rooted in India's heritage.

Over the years, what began as small-scale acts of service has grown into a large network of volunteers, making a significant impact in various areas such as hunger relief, education, and COVID-19 relief efforts.

One of the most notable early initiatives of Guru Arjun Samajik Pratisthan was its annual Diwali celebration for children in orphanages. This event, which has been running for over 15 years, brings together 1300 to 1500 participants each year. The celebration includes cultural activities, competitions, and the distribution of new clothes, gifts, and food. This initiative fosters a sense of belonging, giving the children an opportunity to enjoy the festival of lights, Diwali, while maintaining their dignity and joy without feeling as though charity is being dispensed.

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges. In response, Guru Arjun Samajik Pratisthan led by Sardar Harjeet Singh Wadhwa initiated the Ghar Ghar Langar Sewa (GGLS), a project aimed at feeding those in need. A simple WhatsApp message, "IF anyone is HUNGRY please call or SMS 942 316 2727," sparked a movement that touched thousands of lives.

From the very first day of the lockdown in March 2020, GGLS began receiving an overwhelming number of calls for help. What started with food being prepared in volunteers' homes quickly expanded to a centralized collection and distribution system, all coordinated from a volunteer's gas station. Within a few days, over 3500 calls for food assistance had been received, and volunteers worked tirelessly to meet the demand.

The Start of Ghar Ghar Langar Sewa

The name Ghar Ghar Langar Sewa (GGLS), meaning "home-to-home service," reflects the nature of the project: food prepared in one home is delivered directly to another. Since its inception, GGLS has provided more than 675,000 cooked food packets, 2550 ration kits, and support to over 11,000 migrant workers. Additionally, during the critical second wave of COVID-19, the project supplied oxygen cylinders, portable oxygen cans, and concentrators.

This project continues to grow and thrive, offering daily food distribution services to those in need.
